GWM Brings Electrified Choice with the New ORA 5

South Africa’s compact SUV market has gained another contender with GWM launching the new ORA 5, bringing a wider range of electrified options to one of the country’s most competitive vehicle segments.

Built on the GWM ONE platform, the ORA 5 stands apart by offering three different powertrain options within a single model range. Buyers can choose between petrol, hybrid and fully electric variants without having to move between separate vehicle lines.

Space and Design

Measuring 4 471 mm in length with a 2 720 mm wheelbase, the ORA 5 provides interior space comparable with larger vehicles while maintaining dimensions suited to urban environments.

Its exterior design features a distinctive SUV character with rounded styling, circular LED headlights and roof rails. Inside, the cabin is equipped with a dual-screen layout powered by GWM’s Coffee OS infotainment system, offering smartphone integration and voice command functionality.

Safety remains a key focus, with six airbags and a comprehensive range of driver assistance technologies included as standard. A panoramic glass roof is available as an optional feature on selected models.

Three Powertrain Options

The petrol version is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 105kW and 210Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The hybrid model combines the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a high-output electric motor, producing a combined 164kW and 476Nm. Power is delivered through a two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission designed to improve efficiency and performance.

The fully electric ORA 5 uses a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 150kW and 260Nm. Energy is supplied by a 58.3kWh lithium-ion battery, with a claimed driving range of up to 520km.

Range and Ownership Support

The ORA 5 line-up consists of six models across Super Luxury and Ultra Luxury specifications, giving buyers multiple options across all three powertrain choices.

Pricing starts at R364 900 for the entry-level petrol model and extends to R599 900 for the flagship electric variant.

All ORA 5 models are supported by GWM’s ownership package, including a seven-year or 200 000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 150 000km battery warranty for electrified models, a seven-year or 75 000km service plan and seven years of roadside assistance.

With petrol, hybrid and battery-electric versions available under one nameplate, the GWM ORA 5 gives South African buyers greater flexibility as the market continues to transition towards more efficient and electrified mobility solutions.
