Mitsubishi has expanded its line-up with the new Destinator, a seven-seater SUV aimed at buyers who want space and flexibility without moving into premium territory.

Designed with emerging markets in mind, it blends the upright stance and ground clearance of an SUV with the usability of an MPV, offering three rows of seating and everyday practicality.

Positioned between the smaller Xpander and the more expensive Outlander, it provides a relatively affordable option for families needing seven seats.

The exterior carries Mitsubishi’s familiar design language, with a bold Dynamic Shield grille, T-shaped LED lighting, and 18-inch alloy wheels that give it a confident SUV presence. Inside, the emphasis is on space and versatility, with seats that fold in multiple configurations and numerous storage areas to support daily use. Higher-spec models feature wide digital displays, while the overall layout remains simple and user-friendly.

Equipment levels are generous, especially on the Exceed model, which adds a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, and advanced driver assistance systems such as blind spot warning and a surround view camera. Even the entry-level GLS covers the basics well, with a touchscreen infotainment system and parking aids.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 120kW and 250Nm, paired with a CVT gearbox driving the front wheels. The focus is on smoothness and efficiency rather than outright performance, with drive modes on the Exceed adding versatility for different surfaces.

Pricing starts at R489,990 for the GLS and rises to R569,990 for the Exceed, both backed by a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and service plan. The Destinator’s mix of practicality, affordability, and family-friendly features makes it a strong contender in the crowded SUV space, offering buyers a balanced alternative between Mitsubishi’s existing models.
