Toyota South Africa Motors has introduced the sixth generation RAV4, a model that has defined the crossover SUV segment since its global debut in 1994.
With more than 15 million units sold worldwide, the latest RAV4 arrives with a broader range of powertrains, updated technology and a fresh design, positioning it as a flagship urban lifestyle SUV in the highly competitive medium SUV market.
Built on Toyota’s updated TNGA K platform, the new RAV4 range now includes petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives, marking the first time South African buyers can access electrified versions of the model. The line-up also welcomes the debut of the RAV4 GR Sport, adding a performance-inspired option to the mix.

At entry level, the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 127kW and 203Nm. The 2.5-litre hybrid system combines petrol and electric power for a total output of 163kW, while the flagship 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid delivers 225kW and an electric driving range of up to 142km under test conditions. Equipped with a 25.4kWh lithium-ion battery, the plug-in hybrid supports both AC and DC charging and is supplied with cables and an AC wallbox charger.
Inside, Toyota has introduced a “Digital Island” cabin layout, with every model featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment screens ranging from 10.5- to 12.9-nches. Wireless smartphone connectivity and charging are standard, while higher-specification models add premium features such as JBL audio, panoramic roofs, memory seats and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0-driver assistance systems.
The exterior adopts a more angular, rugged appearance, with hammerhead-inspired styling, pronounced wheel arches and slim rear lighting elements. Cargo capacity has increased by four per cent, and wheel sizes extend up to 20 inches on selected derivatives.

Pricing begins at R770,500 for the RAV4 2.5 HEV GX, rising to R1,043,900 for the flagship 2.5 PHEV. With this new generation, Toyota has broadened the appeal of the RAV4, offering South African buyers a choice between traditional petrol power, hybrid efficiency and plug-in hybrid innovation, while reinforcing its reputation as a pioneer in the SUV segment.
