BMW South Africa’s IT Hub Celebrates 20 Years of Innovation

BMW Group South Africa celebrates 20 years of its IT Hub in Pretoria, now its largest outside Germany, driving global digital innovation and skills.

BMW Group South Africa has celebrated the 20th anniversary of its IT Hub, a facility that has become a cornerstone of the company’s global digital ecosystem.
Since its establishment in 2006, the hub has grown into the largest BMW IT Hub outside Germany, staffed by more than 2,500 professionals who support operations across 130 international locations.

The hub’s growth has reshaped its role in the local economy. Over two decades, it has created more than 2,000 jobs and is expected to contribute over R4 billion to South Africa’s economy in 2026. This success highlights the country’s ability to supply world-class technology talent to global industries.

Thorsten Achenbach, Director of the BMW IT Hub, remarked: “This milestone reflects our commitment to transforming local potential into global innovation.” His words echo the hub’s mission to position South Africa as a key architect of BMW’s digital journey.

Central to this mission is investment in skills development. Outreach programmes and partnerships with universities have reached more than 40,000 young people, while the Graduate Tech Academy continues to prepare participants for careers in technology and media.

Collaboration with academic institutions has strengthened in recent years. The inaugural University of Stellenbosch Colloquium in 2025 showcased student research, and in 2026 a week-long innovation programme will unite students from multiple universities.

The anniversary event, hosted at the Menlyn IT Hub in Pretoria, brought together government officials, industry leaders and academics to celebrate two decades of achievement. It marked not only the hub’s economic impact but also its enduring commitment to nurturing South Africa’s digital future.
