The Volkswagen Polo has reached its 50th anniversary, and the brand has celebrated in spectacular fashion with the release of —50 Years of Polo: Project Drift,— a fast-paced film shot in Nelson Mandela Bay and starring some of the model—s most exciting variants.
The video opens with sweeping scenes at the Port of Gqeberha before moving to Plant Kariega, the car—s production stronghold. Viewers are treated to a line-up of legendary Polos, from the Polo R WRC to the Harlequin-liveried Polo R Supercar, the electric Polo RX1e, and the locally built Polo GTI. A surprise appearance from the ID. Polo, a near-production concept, hints at the car—s future direction and will officially be unveiled in Munich.
—In our communications on the Polo anniversary, we not only want to look back, but forward too and generate enthusiasm for the Volkswagen brand,— explained Jens Katemann, Head of Communications. —This video stands for everything that is quintessential of the Polo: a small car that can do great things and that is geared towards the future.—
Behind the wheel was Johan Kristoffersson, seven-time FIA World Rallycross Champion and two-time Gymkhana Grid Champion. His precise drifts highlight the performance of each Polo. —The shoot was a huge pleasure for me. It was a great experience to drive the sporty Polo models one after the other and push them to their limits,— he said.
Plant Kariega, which has produced the Polo since 1996 and now supplies Europe and Asia-Pacific, was proud to feature so prominently. —We are proud to be such a big part of the Polo success story, and this video is a great source of excitement for the employees who build and sell these cars,— said Andile Dlamini, Volkswagen Group Africa.
