Toyota’s EV onslaught in South Africa

Toyota has expanded its electrification journey in South Africa with the arrival of the bZ4X and bZ4X Touring, its first dedicated battery-electric vehicles.

Toyota has taken another step in its electrification journey in South Africa with the arrival of the bZ4X and bZ4X Touring, its first dedicated battery-electric vehicles.

These models embody the company’s “Beyond Zero” philosophy, offering motorists a choice between urban sophistication and adventurous capability. Built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, they represent a tangible shift towards practical, sustainable mobility while broadening the brand’s new-energy portfolio.

The bZ4X is designed as a refined SUV for professionals and families, balancing comfort, technology and everyday usability. Its cabin has been conceived as an “Activity Hub”, with clean lines, premium materials and a spacious layout. A 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, natural voice recognition and a JBL audio system create a modern environment.

Heated leather seats, a panoramic roof and generous storage solutions add to the sense of premium comfort. The Touring builds on this with increased cargo capacity, making it more versatile for extended trips.

Externally, the bZ4X adopts sleek, aerodynamic styling with Toyota’s Hammerhead front-end design, slim LED headlamps and a full-width rear light bar. The Touring takes a bolder approach, with raised roof rails, a stronger bumper and increased ground clearance, giving it a more rugged stance. Both models ride on distinctive 20-inch alloy wheels.

While they share the same wheelbase, the Touring is longer and taller, offering more luggage space and practicality. The bZ4X is positioned as a premium urban SUV, while the Touring serves as Toyota’s flagship BEV, aimed at customers who regularly travel beyond the city.

Both come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, Intelligent Park Assist, adaptive high-beam LED headlamps and advanced driver assistance systems, with the Touring adding roof rails and a camera washer.

Performance is a key highlight. The bZ4X produces 255 kW and accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the Touring delivers 334 kW and completes the sprint in 4.3 seconds. Driving ranges are estimated at 456–481 km for the bZ4X and 462–487 km for the Touring. Both support up to 22 kW AC charging and DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
