Geely has introduced the E2 to its South African line-up, a compact all-electric hatchback that arrives as one of the most affordable mainstream EVs in the country.

With a starting price of R339 900, it is positioned to attract buyers who want a practical, low-cost way into electric mobility while still enjoying modern features and everyday usability.

The E2 is built on a dedicated electric platform and uses a rear-wheel-drive layout, unusual at this price point. It has been designed primarily for city and suburban driving, offering brisk performance and useful space.

Geely’s local presence is expanding quickly, with 32 dealerships already established and plans to reach 40 by the end of 2026, giving the E2 a stronger support base than many newer entrants. At its price, it represents one of the most accessible routes into EV ownership in South Africa.

Both Aspire and Apex versions share the same drivetrain, powered by an 85 kW electric motor producing 150 Nm. Geely claims the car can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.6 seconds, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 11.5 seconds and a top speed of 130 km/h.

Energy comes from a 39.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, delivering up to 325 km of range on the WLTP cycle. Charging is competitive, with a full AC charge taking six and a half hours, while DC fast charging from 30 to 80 per cent takes about 25 minutes. The E2 also offers vehicle-to-load functionality, allowing external devices to be powered directly from the car.

The cabin is modern and minimalist, with a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument display standard across the range. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and 4G connectivity are included.

Practicality is strong, with 375 litres of boot space expanding to 1320 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a 70-litre front boot and numerous storage compartments. The Apex trim adds vegan leather, soft-touch materials, wireless charging and a six-speaker sound system, while the Aspire focuses on value with fabric seats, manual air conditioning and a four-speaker audio system.

The exterior is clean and contemporary, with a closed-off grille, slim LED headlamps and short overhangs. Its long wheelbase helps maximise cabin space, while the integrated rear spoiler and aerodynamic detailing aid efficiency.

The Aspire rides on 15-inch steel wheels with aero covers, while the Apex gets 16-inch alloys, two-tone paint and privacy glass. The Aspire costs R339 900, while the Apex is priced at R389 900.

Standard cover includes a four-year or 150 000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 200 000 km battery warranty, a three-year or 200 000 km service plan and five years of roadside assistance. A home wallbox charger is also included, subject to finance terms and conditions.
