Chery’s Himla bakkie prepares to make its South African debut

Chery is gearing up to enter South Africa’s bakkie segment with the new Himla, offering bold design, strong capability and potential hybrid options.

Chery is set to extend its footprint in South Africa with the arrival of the new Himla bakkie next year. The Chinese brand, which has established a strong local presence with its growing range of vehicles, plans to take on the popular bakkie market with this bold addition.

While details such as engine options and pricing remain under wraps, the Himla’s combination of design, capability and Chery’s solid reputation is expected to attract strong interest. It is likely that the range will include diesel, petrol and hybrid versions.

Chery recently displayed the Himla camping conversion at the 2025 Chery Brand User Summit in China. This rugged version, powered by a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission delivering 420Nm of torque, doubles as both a recreational vehicle and a mobile base for professionals working in harsh environments.

The brand also demonstrated the versatility of the Himla platform, which underpins a high-performance electric version featuring an 88kWh battery and a range of up to 510km.

Built to adapt to various lifestyles, it offers multiple configurations for activities such as commuting, camping and family travel, reflecting Chery’s focus on versatility and user-oriented innovation.
