Chinese automotive manufacturer Geely has officially re-entered the South African market after a 15-year absence, bringing with it two electrified models aimed at environmentally conscious buyers.
The company's return centres on the E5 range, comprising a fully electric variant and a plug-in hybrid alternative. Both vehicles represent Geely's shift towards new-energy mobility solutions since its departure from South Africa in 2009.

Electric SUV leads the charge
The E5 electric model arrives as a compact SUV in two specification levels: Aspire and Apex. Both versions utilise a 60.22-kilowatt hour battery pack paired with a front-mounted electric motor delivering 160kW and 320Nm. The Aspire achieves a WLTP range of 430 kilometres, whilst the Apex manages 410 kilometres on a single charge.
Rapid charging capability allows the battery to reach 30 to 80 percent capacity in approximately 20 minutes. Standard features include Vehicle to Load and Vehicle to Vehicle charging functions, a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Boot capacity measures 461 litres, expanding to 1,877 litres with seats folded. Pricing starts at R699,999 for the Aspire, rising to R759,999 for the Apex.
Hybrid option extends range
The E5 EM i combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 73kW and 125Nm with an electric motor contributing 160kW and 262Nm. An 18.4-kilowatt hour battery enables electric-only driving, with the system offering pure electric, hybrid and power modes. Total range reaches 943 kilometres, addressing concerns about charging infrastructure availability.

The hybrid model features a 15.4-inch infotainment display running Geely's Flyme system, surround view monitoring and wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility. Apex specification adds a 16-speaker audio system, powered sunroof and additional comfort features. Pricing spans R599,999 for the Aspire to R679,999 for the Apex grade.
Both models benefit from Geely Care plus programme coverage. The vehicles carry a six-year or 150,000-kilometre warranty, whilst batteries receive eight-year or 200,000-kilometre protection. Roadside assistance extends for five years with unlimited distance.
Geely has established a dealer network supported by local parts distribution facilities, with expansion planned as the brand strengthens its market position.
