Revolutionary automotive technology reaches South African shores as Changan unveils the Hunter REEV, the world’s inaugural range extender electric bakkie. This innovative vehicle addresses the primary concern preventing many South Africans from adopting electric vehicles: range anxiety.
The Hunter REEV employs sophisticated range extender electric vehicle technology, utilising a compact, efficient petrol engine exclusively as a battery generator. This system delivers comprehensive electric driving benefits whilst providing over 1,000km total range, surpassing traditional internal combustion engines.
Built as a rugged 4x4 double-cab bakkie, the Hunter REEV offers quiet operation, instant power delivery for superior acceleration, reduced emissions, and intelligent features typical of premium electric vehicles. The system eliminates charging infrastructure concerns whilst maintaining environmental benefits.

Changan’s broader South African range encompasses the Alsvin sedan, CS75 Pro SUV variants, traditional Hunter ICE bakkie, and the all-electric Deepal S07 SUV. Each model incorporates Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and intelligent infotainment technology designed for local conditions.
The Deepal S07 demonstrates Changan’s commitment to accessible luxury through features like rotating infotainment screens, gesture recognition controls, wireless fast charging, and augmented reality displays. These technologies transform routine driving into intuitive, connected experiences.
"South Africans shouldn’t have to choose between affordability and smart technology," states Jameel SA Country Manager Marinus Venter. "At Changan, both value and surprising features arrive standard. Our vehicles offer intuitive tech experiences, designed with local driving conditions and lifestyle habits in mind."
This launch represents a significant step towards mainstream electric vehicle adoption, offering practical solutions tailored specifically for South African driving requirements and infrastructure realities.
