As South Africa’s latest class of matrics receive their 2025 results, many are beginning to reflect on the next chapter of their lives.

Although university is often marketed as the natural progression after school, it is far from the only viable option – and for numerous young people, it may not be the most suitable route to long-term success.

For those who take pleasure in hands-on work, enjoy unravelling technical challenges and are drawn to modern technology, a trade in the automotive industry may offer exactly the kind of opportunity that aligns with their strengths and ambitions.

“University isn’t the right path for every young person – and it doesn’t need to be,” says Louis van Huyssteen, National Training Director at the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI). “A trade qualification offers a direct, practical entry into meaningful employment. Within the automotive sector, it also provides international mobility and recognition.”

The automotive aftermarket remains one of the country’s most robust and economically significant sectors, supporting more than 300,000 jobs and over 22,000 businesses, while contributing roughly 2.1% to South Africa’s GDP. It encompasses a wide array of specialist fields, from mechanical diagnostics and electrical systems to body repair, refinishing, component supply, tyres and battery systems. Importantly, all these areas are currently experiencing a notable shortage of skilled artisans.

“South Africa has a pressing need for more technically trained professionals,” Van Huyssteen explains. “Young people entering the industry now are joining a sector that is modern, fast-moving and rich with opportunity. Many apprentices receive job offers well before they complete their training.”

Apprenticeships blend classroom learning with real-world workshop experience, culminating in a trade test that allows learners to qualify as artisans – a status recognised and respected internationally.

With Occupational Qualifications now firmly established, learners follow a structured, industry-aligned pathway designed to develop deep technical knowledge, practical capability and workplace readiness. “These programmes prepare young people for the next generation of vehicles – from hybrids and electric cars to sophisticated diagnostic technologies,” Van Huyssteen adds.

The industry has also seen encouraging progress in gender diversity. A growing number of young women are enrolling in automotive trades and excelling in roles ranging from mechanical and electrical work to diagnostics and body repair. “Women bring sharp technical acumen and strong problem-solving abilities,” says Van Huyssteen. “They are performing exceptionally well and moving confidently into leadership positions.”

For matriculants weighing their options – especially those who may not have attained the university entry marks they hoped for – an automotive trade offers a respected, practical and financially promising alternative. Many artisans advance rapidly, secure steady employment or even establish their own businesses.

“An apprenticeship develops discipline, logical thinking and resilience,” Van Huyssteen says. “These are valuable skills that last a lifetime. A qualified artisan can build a stable career, support their family and make a meaningful contribution to the economy.”

The RMI encourages young people to explore opportunities through TVET colleges, accredited training providers and RMI associations such as MIWA (mechanical workshops), TEPA (tyres, equipment, parts) and SAMBRA (motor body repair).

“As we begin a new year, I want to remind young South Africans that one exam result does not determine your future,” van Huyssteen concludes. “There are many pathways to success. A trade in the automotive industry is one of the most dynamic, empowering and globally relevant options available.”
