Volvo Cars Unveils Revolutionary Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt

Volvo's new multi-adaptive safety belt, debuting in the 2026 EX60, customizes crash protection using real-time data for individual occupants.

Volvo Cars has introduced the world's first multi-adaptive safety belt, a groundbreaking technology that personalizes crash protection for individual occupants. Set to debut in the fully electric Volvo EX60 in 2026, this innovation represents a major evolution of the three-point safety belt that Volvo invented in 1959.

The new system uses real-time data from interior and exterior sensors to customize protection based on each person's unique characteristics, including height, weight, body shape, and seating position. During a crash, the belt automatically adjusts its force application ' providing higher belt loads for larger occupants in severe crashes to prevent head injuries, while delivering lower loads for smaller occupants in minor crashes to reduce rib fracture risk.

Unlike traditional safety belts with just three load-limiting profiles, this advanced system offers eleven different profiles with numerous possible settings. The technology analyzes crash characteristics ' direction, speed, and passenger posture ' in milliseconds to select the optimal protection level.

"This marks a major upgrade to the modern three-point safety belt, estimated to have saved over a million lives," says sa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. The system continuously improves through over-the-air software updates, becoming smarter as Volvo gathers more real-world data.

Drawing from over five decades of safety research and a database of 80,000 real-world accidents, Volvo's innovation integrates seamlessly with airbags, occupant detection, and driver assistance systems. The technology was developed and tested at Volvo's industry-leading Safety Centre crash lab, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

This advancement reinforces Volvo's commitment to creating equally safe vehicles for all occupants based on real-world traffic scenarios.
