Toyota unveils next-generation Hilux with electric power-2

Toyota has lifted the covers off its ninth-generation Hilux in Thailand, marking a major step for the brand as it introduces a full electric version alongside its traditional engines.

Although Toyota South Africa has yet to confirm local arrival dates, expectations are that the new model could reach the country during 2025.

The popular 2.8-litre turbo-diesel, delivering 150 kW and 500 Nm, is expected to continue, as well as the 2.4-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engines. The electric model adds a fresh dimension to the range with dual motors, a 59kWh battery and a 315 km claimed range.

The new Hilux retains its proven platform but adopts sharper styling and modern technology. Its honeycomb grille and sleek headlights give it a resemblance to the Corolla Cross, while a sculpted rear enhances its appeal. Inside, the design draws from the latest Land Cruiser Prado, adding comfort and refinement.

Since its first introduction to South Africa in 1969, the Hilux has evolved through milestones such as the “Legend” editions and the celebrated 55-year anniversary model. The Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal remains at the heart of its ongoing success story.
