Stellantis has achieved a significant breakthrough in electric vehicle technology through its collaboration with Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary. Their Intelligent Battery Integrated System (IBIS) represents years of French-based collaborative research aimed at creating more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions.

The innovative IBIS technology reimagines electric powertrains by integrating inverter and charger functions directly within the battery pack, regardless of chemistry type. This unified architecture handles both alternating and direct current, delivering power directly to the motor or grid whilst supplying the vehicle’s 12V network and auxiliary systems.

Real-world testing reveals impressive performance improvements. IBIS delivers up to 10% better energy efficiency under WLTC cycle conditions and generates 15% more power (172kW versus 150kW) using identical battery sizes. Weight reduction totals 40kg per vehicle, whilst freeing 17 litres of additional space for improved aerodynamics and design flexibility.

Charging times see notable improvement too, with early results showing 15% faster charging. A typical 7kW AC charging session drops from seven to six hours, accompanied by 10% energy savings throughout the process.

"By rethinking and simplifying the electric powertrain architecture, we are making it lighter, more efficient and more cost-effective. These are the kinds of innovations that help us deliver better, more affordable EVs to our customers," states Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Stellantis.

Herv° Amoss°, EVP Energy Storage Systems at Saft, emphasises the technology’s potential: "By embedding IBIS technology into our next-generation applications, we’re unlocking a new era of intelligent, flexible and sustainable energy solutions."
