South Africa's new energy vehicle (NEV) market is experiencing remarkable growth, with demand for greener mobility solutions surging over the past two years. According to the Automotive Business Council (naamsa), the country doubled its NEV sales in 2024 year-on-year, demonstrating strong consumer appetite for environmentally friendly transportation.

The momentum continued into 2025, with first-quarter NEV sales growing 14% compared to the same period in 2024. However, pure electric vehicle (EV) sales declined during this period, highlighting the complex dynamics within the NEV sector. NEV categories include traditional hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and battery-only electric vehicles.

The influx of Chinese manufacturers is reshaping the market landscape, bringing more affordable options to South African consumers. Despite this, EVs remain the most expensive component in the NEV portfolio, contributing to their slower adoption compared to hybrids.

South Africans have proven to be late adopters of EVs, while hybrid acceptance is more widespread. Key barriers to EV adoption include affordability concerns, inadequate public charging infrastructure, and the ongoing challenge of load-shedding. Currently, South Africa has between 350-400 public charging stations compared to 4,000-5,000 fuel stations, though the charging network is expanding rapidly.

A significant development is BYD's upcoming launch of the Atto1, expected to retail between R300,000-R400,000, making it South Africa's most affordable EV passenger car. The vehicle will feature BYD's advanced Blade Battery technology with lithium iron phosphate, offering improved safety through slow heat generation and enhanced cooling efficiency.

Market leadership varies by segment. Toyota's Corolla Cross Hybrid dominates monthly NEV sales, though it faces increasing competition from new hybrid models from Chery and GWM. BMW leads the plug-in hybrid segment, while the EV market sees intense competition between Volvo, BMW, and BYD for the top position.

The commercial segment is also embracing EVs, with competitively priced passenger EVs expected to drive long-term adoption. While hybrids currently represent the preferred transition technology for South African consumers, the introduction of more affordable EVs like the BYD Atto1 could accelerate pure electric vehicle adoption in the medium to long term, supporting the country's clean air mobility goals.
