The head of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), Jeanne Esterhuizen, has delivered a powerful message to the automotive aftermarket community, calling for unwavering commitment to safety standards, environmental sustainability, and operational best practice—values she identifies as crucial to establishing a dependable and ethically-driven sector.
During her participation as an adjudicator at this year's MasterDrive Fleet Safety Awards held at Automechanika, Esterhuizen highlighted the impressive calibre of competition entries and underscored that superior performance in fleet operations and road safety is never achieved by chance. "Such results are born from intentional choices, persistent implementation, and quantifiable commitment," she remarked.
The RMI President observed that this year's awards demonstrated clear progress, with participating companies presenting increasingly data-driven approaches that transcend basic compliance requirements to foster an authentic safety-oriented culture. "There's a growing number of organisations moving beyond rhetoric to implement practical strategies that save lives, boost operational performance, and support environmental objectives."
She pointed to the undeniable correlation between road safety and ecological responsibility, remarking that the disciplined practices which protect human life simultaneously benefit the planet. "From driver training programmes focused on fuel efficiency and intelligent route planning to embracing hybrid and electric vehicle technology, these initiatives show genuine commitment to safeguarding our future. Safety and environmental stewardship aren't separate agendas—they're intrinsically linked," she stated.
The industry leader also stressed that sustainability must encompass human welfare. "When rest facilities for professional drivers are secure, well-maintained, and offer proper amenities, they reflect the value we place on those who sustain our economic activity. Operational excellence must always be grounded in respect for people."
Reflecting upon her extensive career in the automotive aftermarket sector, Esterhuizen reiterated that constant vigilance forms the foundation of effective safety management. "The moment vigilance diminishes, risk intensifies. Advanced technology and monitoring infrastructure are extremely valuable, but their protective capacity is only realised when the data they capture is thoroughly examined and appropriate action taken."
