The electric Polestar 4 (part of Volvo and Geely) is about to become the first vehicle with a navigation system that literally watches the road ahead. Google Maps is introducing live lane guidance, a feature that uses the car's front camera and AI to provide real-time navigation assistance based on actual road conditions rather than just map data.
Unlike traditional GPS navigation that relies solely on pre-mapped information, this system actively monitors lane markings and road signs through the vehicle's camera. The AI processes this visual information instantly, merging it with Google Maps' routing data to create a more dynamic and responsive navigation experience.
The result is contextually aware guidance that understands where you are on the road, not just where you are on the map. If you're approaching your exit but find yourself several lanes away, the system recognizes the problem and alerts you with both visual and audio cues, giving you time to make safe lane changes.
The feature specifically targets a common pain point for drivers: navigating unfamiliar multi-lane highways. The in-dash display shows which lanes are appropriate for your route with blue highlighting, eliminating the guesswork that often leads to missed exits or hasty, unsafe manoeuvres across multiple lanes.

Both Google and Polestar frame this as a safety enhancement. By reducing navigation-related stress and preventing last-minute decisions, the technology aims to make highway driving more predictable and less prone to the accidents that often occur when drivers realize too late they're in the wrong lane.
The feature will arrive on US and Swedish Polestar 4 models in the coming months, marking the latest milestone in a partnership that began in 2020 when the Polestar 2 debuted as the first car with Android Automotive's Google built-in system. Google has confirmed that live lane guidance will eventually expand to other vehicles and more diverse road types through collaborations with additional automakers.
According to Andrew Foster, Google Maps' Director of Product Management, the technology represents a new standard for automotive navigation. Polestar's Head of UI/UX, Sid Odedra, views it as a continuation of the company's focus on reducing cognitive load for drivers, keeping them safer and more confident behind the wheel.
