The 2026 South African Rally-Raid Championship is poised to burst into life in early May, with the Outeniqua 600 confirmed as the opening round of the new season.
Taking place from 8 to 10 May in the heart of the Garden Route, the event will once again be headquartered at Louvain Guest Farm and is already shaping up to be a major highlight on the national motorsport calendar.
Originally scheduled to start the season earlier, the championship’s opener was delayed due to the recent Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak. According to SA Rally-Raid CEO Archie Rutherford, the postponement has only increased anticipation for what promises to be a memorable return to competition in one of South Africa’s most scenic racing regions.
The Outeniqua 600 made its debut in 2025 and immediately struck a chord with competitors, earning Event of the Year honours in its first appearance. For 2026, it takes on added significance as the opening round of the championship, with heightened stakes and renewed focus from teams eager to make an early impression.
Strong backing from within the rally-raid community underlines the event’s growing stature. This year’s title sponsorship comes from the Corbett family, long regarded as stalwarts of the sport, alongside Century Property Developments and Century Racing, further reinforcing confidence in the event’s future.
Covering approximately 566 kilometres over three demanding days, the Outeniqua 600 is designed to test both endurance and precision. With one and a half championship points on offer, crews will have every reason to push hard from the outset. The route combines familiar stages run in reverse with newly introduced sections, ensuring that experience alone will not guarantee success.
Competitors can expect a wide variety of terrain, ranging from high-speed gravel roads to technical mountain passes and historic ox-wagon trails. Race Director Evan Hutchison notes that the course demands adaptability, requiring drivers and navigators to remain sharp across vastly different conditions.
A major development for 2026 is the introduction of electronic road books for all competitors. The move brings the local championship into closer alignment with international rally-raid standards, including those used at Dakar, while enhancing safety, navigation accuracy and overall event management.
Action begins with a qualifying stage on Friday, followed by long, punishing stages on Saturday and a decisive final leg on Sunday. Throughout the weekend, Louvain Guest Farm will serve as the central hub for competitors and spectators alike.
