Nissan commits to Wayve AI for next-generation driver assistance

Nissan partners with Wayve to integrate embodied AI into next-gen ProPILOT systems, bringing advanced driver assistance to global markets from 2027.

Nissan has become the first major carmaker to commit to deploying artificial intelligence powered driver assistance systems at scale, signing definitive agreements with British technology company Wayve to integrate its embodied AI software across multiple vehicle ranges.

The Japanese manufacturer will combine Wayve's AI Driver technology with its next-generation ProPILOT systems, with the first production models set to launch in Japan during fiscal year 2027. The collaboration builds on a prototype unveiled in September 2025 that demonstrated the AI system handling both motorway and complex urban driving scenarios.

Nissan's ProPILOT technology has evolved considerably since its 2016 debut as a single-lane motorway assistance feature. The 2019 ProPILOT 2.0 update introduced multi-lane support and hands-off driving capabilities, features now available across numerous models in the Nissan lineup.

The new partnership will see Wayve AI Driver integrated with Nissan's Ground Truth Perception technology, which utilises next-generation LiDAR alongside existing cameras and radar sensors. This combination aims to deliver intelligent driving capabilities across various vehicle segments, from compact cars to larger models.

Wayve's end-to-end embodied AI is designed to adapt efficiently to new cities and vehicle platforms with minimal additional development work. The system's deployment in mass-produced vehicles will generate real-world driving data from diverse conditions, enabling continuous improvement of the technology over time.

Ivan Espinosa, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Co, Ltd, said the partnership would "deliver safer, more intuitive and more comfortable driving experiences to customers worldwide" whilst accelerating the transition towards an intelligent mobility future.

Alex Kendall, Co-founder and CEO of Wayve, praised Nissan for leading the way among global carmakers by bringing embodied AI towards mass production, adding that the partnership would make next-generation intelligent driving technology accessible to customers worldwide.

The collaboration marks a significant milestone for autonomous driving technology, moving advanced AI systems from prototype demonstrations into everyday production vehicles. Nissan plans to deploy the technology in global markets including Japan and North America.
