Nissan Accelerates NEV Strategy in China

Nissan debuts two PHEV SUV concepts at Auto China 2026, outlining bold electrification plans and global export ambitions.

Nissan has used Auto China 2026 to underline its ambitions in one of its most important markets, unveiling two new plug-in hybrid SUV concepts while setting out a broader vision for electrification and global exports.

The Urban SUV PHEV Concept is aimed squarely at younger Chinese customers, blending advanced electrification with everyday urban performance. Its styling draws inspiration from the NX8 and signals the direction of Nissan’s future SUV line-up.

Alongside it, the Terrano PHEV Concept revives a familiar nameplate, combining off-road heritage with modern hybrid technology to meet the dual demands of outdoor adventure and city commuting. Production versions of both are expected within a year, with three further NEV models also planned for the Chinese market in the same timeframe.

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s President and CEO, emphasised China’s dual role as both a fiercely competitive domestic arena and a global innovation hub. He noted that “advanced technology must serve a clear purpose and be experienced directly by customers through mobility that is safer, more intuitive, and more accessible.” This philosophy underpins Nissan’s new vision, “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,” which positions China alongside Japan and the United States as a lead market.

Since 2025, Nissan has accelerated its NEV rollout in China with models such as the N7, Frontier Pro PHEV, N6, and NX8. These vehicles, developed with “China speed” and local innovation, have gained strong recognition. Export plans are already in motion: the N7 is destined for Latin America and ASEAN, while the Frontier Pro will reach those regions and the Middle East. The NX8 and the forthcoming Terrano PHEV production model are also slated for selected global markets.

Nissan’s target is ambitious: one million annual sales in China by fiscal 2030, with exports playing a central role in achieving that milestone.
