Milestone Moment for Polo Production in Kariega

Volkswagen Group Africa celebrates producing its 500,000th facelifted Polo in Kariega, reinforcing the plant’s global role as the Home of Polo exports

The Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) plant in Kariega has reached another significant milestone, building its 500 000th facelifted Polo just over a year after becoming the official Home of Polo.

The half-millionth car, a Kings Red Polo destined for Germany, rolled off the line earlier this month, marking yet another achievement in the plant’s proud manufacturing history.

Production of the Polo at Kariega began in 1996, and since August 2021, the current facelift version has been produced with steady consistency. From July 2024, the facility became the sole global supplier of the Polo for Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions, exporting to more than 30 countries while maintaining a strong local presence.

So far, 452 207 of the latest models have been built for export, with 47 793 staying in South Africa. In total, 1 992 464 Polos have been produced at the plant since its inception, confirming its importance to Volkswagen’s global operations.

Recognised as South Africa’s most exported car in 2024 and awarded both Vehicle of the Year: Top Local Manufacturer and Top Exported Vehicle at the Naamsa Accelerator Awards, the Polo continues to set benchmarks.

Production Director Ulrich Schwabe praised the team’s dedication, saying he was proud to share this achievement with colleagues who build, sell and export “this high-quality car to the world.”
