The Mercedes-Benz Learning Academy (MBLA) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first institution in South Africa accredited as a Trade Test facility for Mechatronics.
This recognition positions MBLA at the forefront of artisan training in advanced technologies and underscores its role as a pioneer in technical education.
Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary trade that combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, and control systems. It equips artisans with the expertise required to work on complex automated and digitally controlled technologies, which are increasingly vital in modern industry. Accreditation as a trade test centre allows MBLA to formally assess and certify artisans, ensuring they meet nationally recognised standards.
The qualification was introduced by the Department of Higher Education and Training and developed by the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB). Following pilot projects in 2024 and 2025, the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations granted accreditation.
MBLA was chosen as the national pilot centre, a decision reflecting its state-of-the-art equipment and world-class facilities. The Academy also collaborates with MerSETA and other government bodies to deliver certified training and trade testing.
Thapelo Lakaje, Head of Human Relations at Mercedes-Benz South Africa, emphasises the significance of the achievement. “Being selected as the country’s first Mechatronics Trade Centre underscores our dedication to world-class training rooted in doing things the right way. It is taking the time to prepare artisans for the real expectations of the industry. We are proud of the commitment shown by every learner and instructor at MBLA, who bring consistency, care and pride into their work each day.”
Established in 1981 as one of South Africa’s first fully integrated multi-racial technical training centres, MBLA was transformed in 2016 through a Public-Private Partnership into a modern Learning Academy. Today, it is among the few centres in the Eastern Cape accredited to conduct trade tests for Electrician, Millwright, Fitter, Fitter and Turner, Automotive Motor Mechanic, and Transportation Electrician qualifications.
For more than four decades, MBLA has delivered quality training and developed a skilled artisan pipeline that supports Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s business model while addressing youth unemployment. The new accreditation for Mechatronics adds another chapter to its legacy, ensuring the Academy continues to shape the future of technical expertise in the country.
