Lexus RZ: A Bold Electric Debut in South Africa

Lexus introduces the RZ in South Africa, a purpose-built electric SUV combining advanced performance, sleek design, and intelligent AWD technology.

Lexus has introduced the RZ to South Africa, its first globally available, purpose-built battery electric vehicle (BEV). More than a new model, the RZ signals a decisive shift in the brand’s philosophy: electrification is no longer an alternative, but the very foundation of the Lexus driving experience.

Line-up

The local RZ range has been carefully structured to provide progression within the premium electric SUV segment. It consists of four models:

RZ 500e EX

RZ 500e SE

RZ 550e F SPORT

RZ 600e F SPORT Performance (arriving later)

Platform

Unlike adapted internal combustion platforms, the RZ has been conceived from the ground up around a dedicated electric architecture. This ensures that electrification influences every aspect of the vehicle, from performance to driver engagement.

Exterior Design

The evolved spindle body concept retains Lexus’s unmistakable identity. Clean surfacing and balanced proportions define the RZ 500e EX and SE, complemented by aerodynamic refinements that reduce drag and enhance efficiency.

The RZ 550e F SPORT adds functional performance elements such as sculpted air ducts, fin-shaped bumper mouldings, and a rear spoiler with diffuser.

Later this year, the RZ 600e F SPORT Performance will extend this philosophy with extensive carbon fibre components and advanced aerodynamic treatments, engineered for both visual drama and measurable downforce.

Specification Differences

RZ 500e EX – establishes the foundation with generous specification and strong performance.

RZ 500e SE – elevates material quality, technology integration, and comfort innovation.

RZ 550e F SPORT – introduces a sharper, more emotionally engaging character with advanced chassis technologies.

RZ 600e F SPORT Performance – will serve as the halo derivative, pushing electrified capability to new heights.

Interior

Driver-focused ergonomics ensure that primary controls and displays are positioned within natural reach and line of sight. A dial-type shift-by-wire system replaces the conventional gear selector with rotary control.

In SE and F SPORT derivatives, the cabin is further enhanced by a 14-inch Full HD multimedia display, a 13-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, wireless charging, and full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Powertrain

At the heart of the RZ lies a revised BEV system:

74.6 kWh battery in EX and SE grades

76.9 kWh battery in F SPORT models

Outputs:

RZ 500e EX & SE – 280kW combined output

RZ 550e F SPORT – 300kW combined output

All derivatives feature DIRECT4 intelligent all-wheel drive. A newly developed water-cooling system maintains stable battery temperatures during repeated acceleration, sustained highway driving, or rapid charging.

Charging: 10–80% charge achievable in approximately 30 minutes under low-temperature scenarios.
