Lamborghini is reshaping its future product strategy after concluding that enthusiasm for fully electric supercars has weakened among its traditional buyer base.
The marque has abandoned its planned production version of the all-electric Lanzador concept first shown in 2023, and will instead introduce a plug-in hybrid model in its place. Chief executive Stephan Winkelmann has described the pursuit of a full-EV programme as financially risky at a time when customer appetite for battery-only performance cars remains minimal.
This reversal follows more than a year of internal evaluation supported by dealer feedback, global data and discussions with customers. According to Winkelmann, many Lamborghini owners feel that electric vehicles do not yet provide the emotional engagement that defines the brand, particularly the visceral sound and mechanical involvement associated with combustion engines. Buyers interviewed by the Sunday Times echoed this sentiment, noting that current EVs struggle to deliver the drama and connection expected of an ultra-high-performance car.

Although the company has stepped back from a pure-electric launch, Lamborghini remains committed to electrification through hybrid technology. Its updated strategy targets a fully plug-in hybrid range by 2030, while retaining combustion-engined models for as long as global regulations permit. The shift marks a notable departure from the brand’s earlier roadmap set out in 2021, when it planned significant investment in both hybrid and all-electric development.
Early market results suggest the pivot is resonating. Lamborghini delivered a record 10,747 cars in 2025, driven by strong demand for the hybrid Revuelto, the plug-in Urus SUV and the hybrid Temerario, which helped complete the transition to an electrified line-up. Europe remains its largest market, followed by the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region.
Industry analysis indicates that electric technology has yet to convince core supercar enthusiasts, and slowing demand has contributed to delays in the Lanzador’s development timeline. Lamborghini’s revised path reflects its effort to preserve the emotional qualities that define its cars while embracing electrification in a form its customers welcome.
