Hyundai’s Mentorship Initiative Opens Doors for Learners

Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s Drive Your Dreams Mentorship Programme is making a meaningful impact less than a year after its launch by equipping young learners with practical workplace skills, industry exposure and career guidance that extends beyond the classroom.

Launched in August 2025, the initiative partnered with Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation to support 30 learners through five workplace readiness modules designed to prepare them for future careers.

The cohort achieved an impressive average score of 87%, with standout participant Gift Mbangi achieving 95%. Reflecting on his experience, Mbangi said the programme provided him with greater insight into the motor industry, with learning how Hyundai trucks are assembled becoming one of his highlights. He added that the mentorship increased his confidence and helped clarify his career goals.

The programme combines academic learning with hands-on workplace exposure. Learners visited Hyundai’s Parts Distribution Centre and Apex Plant, gaining insight into manufacturing, logistics and business operations. Training modules covered customer experience, sales, assertiveness and workplace readiness, helping participants develop both technical knowledge and essential interpersonal skills.

Hyundai has committed to awarding one learner from the current group a full university bursary, creating a pathway towards further education and career development.

With youth unemployment remaining a major challenge in South Africa, programmes such as Drive Your Dreams play an important role in preparing learners for the workplace by providing practical experience, confidence and the skills needed to compete in a changing economy.
