Chery South Africa is set to mark a major milestone in its local operations with the start of production of the Tiggo 4 Cross at its Rosslyn plant in the second half of 2027. The move signals the company's transition from importer to manufacturer, strengthening its foothold in South Africa's automotive industry.
The Tiggo 4 range, which includes the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo Cross, has already proven its popularity. Between January and June 2026, Chery sold 11,322 units, making it the second best-selling passenger vehicle brand in the country during that period. Monthly sales consistently exceeded 1,600 units, with June reaching a peak of 2,070. This strong demand underpins Chery's decision to localise production.
The Rosslyn facility will initially produce both internal combustion and hybrid-electric derivatives, catering to traditional petrol buyers while supporting growing demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles. A planned output of 15,000 units is expected during the ramp-up phase in late 2027, with further expansion anticipated as operations mature.
Chery's investment extends beyond vehicle assembly. The company has pledged to retain all 692 current employees at Rosslyn while creating nearly 3,000 additional jobs across manufacturing, logistics and the supply chain. A localisation programme is also under way, engaging Tier 1 suppliers to increase domestic content and support skills development.
Chery Chairman and President Yin Tongyue said the company had moved from being an importer to becoming a manufacturer and long-term industrial partner in South Africa.
Looking ahead, feasibility studies are also exploring the potential production of a light commercial vehicle, including a bakkie, at the Rosslyn plant. If approved, this would further diversify Chery's local product portfolio and strengthen its role in the regional automotive market.
