Hyundai Responds to Safety Debate Around Grand i10

Hyundai confirms the Grand i10 fully complies with South Africa’s 53 safety and homologation requirements, ensuring roadworthy assurance.

Hyundai Automotive South Africa has reaffirmed that the Hyundai Grand i10 fully complies with all safety and homologation requirements required for vehicles sold and operated in South Africa.

The clarification follows renewed public discussion around vehicle safety standards and consumer ratings.

The response comes after a media release by the Automobile Association of South Africa drew attention to the zero star adult occupant safety rating awarded to the Grand i10 under the Global New Car Assessment Programme. Hyundai emphasised that regulatory approval in South Africa is governed by national legislation rather than independent testing programmes.

To be approved for use on local roads, a vehicle must meet 53 requirements set by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications. These include braking performance, frontal impact protection, door latch integrity, child restraint anchorage systems, airbags and other regulated safety features. Hyundai confirmed that the Grand i10 complies with all 53 requirements.

“Safety is deeply embedded in Hyundai’s global and local product philosophy,” says Stanley Anderson, chief executive officer of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “The Hyundai Grand i10 has been engineered to meet all South African road and safety requirements, and NRCS confirmation provides credible assurance to our customers and stakeholders that these standards have been independently verified.”

He added that “while additional independent assessments and ratings, such as NCAP, serve as useful reference points, they continue to evolve and do not replace or override South Africa’s established regulatory standards.”
