Hino South Africa is continuing its local field trials of the Hino 300 Hybrid with selected customers to evaluate performance and gauge market interest in new energy vehicles.
The eco-friendly Hino 300 Hybrid combines a 4-litre Euro 6 turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor to reduce harmful emissions and improve fuel economy. Three units have been on trial with Namlog Logistics since 2023, operating from the Toyota Africa Parts Centre in Ekurhuleni as part of Toyota South Africa Motors' New Energy Vehicle (NEV) strategy.
Hino Motors Japan has long been committed to reducing emissions and fuel consumption through cleaner manufacturing and operational practices. This multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality has led to developing various powertrain solutions, from compressed natural gas and hydrogen to diesel-electric hybrids and battery electric vehicles.
"The balance between cost, range, payload, maintenance and resale is critical when determining optimal technology for specific applications. That's why we're trialling several Hino 300 Hybrid trucks locally to evaluate these factors," said Itumeleng Segage, General Manager of Hino SA.
Recent Australian testing on the 300km Bathurst circuit, replicating local delivery conditions, demonstrated fuel savings of up to 24% for Wide Cab variants and 22% for Standard Cab models.
Unlike many hybrid passenger cars that downsize engines, Hino retains the full-size diesel engine to ensure longevity and an under-stressed powertrain. The electric motor sits between clutch and gearbox, working parallel with the diesel engine for improved efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. Combined, they produce 111kW power and 470Nm torque, with maximum torque delivered at just 1,200r/min. The six-speed automated manual transmission can be manually overridden when required.
"We're enthusiastic about hybrid technology's value in operations suited to the 300 Series, particularly urban and city-to-city deliveries. We eagerly await local trial results and customer feedback," Itumeleng concludes.
