The future of transport will not rely on one solution, according to Hino South Africa, which is investing in a variety of new energy vehicles to suit different needs.

—Hino is committed to taking a multipath approach for its trucks, with the choice of a power unit, which will best suit the operators— needs,— explained General Manager Itumeleng Segage at a recent media event.

The manufacturer is maintaining diesel engine development while also advancing hybrid and battery electric vehicles in certain regions. Hydrogen is being trialled globally as a zero-emission option, especially for long-haul trucks that can refuel at equipped depots.

Here in South Africa, 38 Hino 300 diesel-electric hybrid trucks are on trial with operators. —Fuel consumption with this type of power unit is showing savings of up to 20%,— said Segage. He noted that Hino is subsidising the acquisition cost during the trial phase to overcome high initial pricing.

The programme is supported by Toyota—s mobility brand KINTO, which will provide all-inclusive leasing solutions. Hino also showcased the Dutro Z EV van, already in use abroad. With a 150km driving range, one ton capacity and quick charging capability, it offers an efficient option for last-mile deliveries in urban areas.
