Toyota South Africa Motors has expanded the appeal of its best-selling bakkie with the introduction of Hilux Custom Builds, a programme that allows customers to order professionally engineered conversions directly through the brand’s dealer network.
It gives buyers a factory level alternative to traditional aftermarket fitments while ensuring that every modification is fully integrated and tested to Toyota’s own standards.
Each build begins with a purpose prepared flat deck Hilux 2.4 GD 6 in either 4X2 or 4X4 form. Toyota engineers work within the Toyota Motor Corporation’s global Conversion Vehicle Partner Programme framework to develop each configuration from the ground up.
This process ensures that every converted unit maintains structural integrity, component compatibility and the long-term durability that Hilux owners expect. All conversions are evaluated under South African operating conditions before being approved for sale.

Customers can choose from a broad selection of solutions, including steel or aluminium dropsides, cargo rails with optional dropsides, drybox storage for secure equipment transport and several canopy options for general or field technician use. These conversions cater to applications in agriculture, construction, mining, logistics and other industries where a reliable and ready to work vehicle is essential.
A significant benefit is the ability to order the conversion together with the vehicle. This removes delays normally associated with third party installations and ensures that the completed bakkie is delivered as a single, factory supported unit. Because the conversion is invoiced with the Hilux itself, its value is fully recognised at resale, providing a more predictable ownership cycle.
Hilux Custom Builds are available through Toyota’s fleet and accessories dealer network, where customers can obtain guidance on pricing, technical compatibility and the ideal configuration for their operational requirements.
