GWM South Africa has introduced a new 2WD diesel version of its Tank 300 SUV, making the model more accessible whilst retaining its distinctive styling and performance credentials.
Performance and efficiency:
The Tank 300 2WD features a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine producing 135kW and 480Nm of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain maintains the same 3-tonne braked towing capacity as the 4WD variant whilst achieving fuel consumption of 7.7L/100km.
Despite losing four-wheel drive, the 2WD retains capability for gravel roads through its robust NCAP-rated frame, electronic rear differential lock, transparent chassis view, and off-road thermal management.
Interior and technology:
The cabin features electrically adjustable front seats with synthetic leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control. Sound insulation includes double-sealed doors and acoustic glass for a refined driving environment.
Technology centres on dual 12.3-inch displays - one for infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, another serving as the instrument cluster. A nine-speaker audio system completes the package.
Safety and pricing:
The Tank 300 holds a five-star ANCAP safety rating, with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, emergency braking, blind spot detection, and 360-degree cameras amongst its safety features.
The 2WD Diesel Luxury starts at R649,900, positioned below the 4WD Super Luxury (R699,900) and 4WD Ultra Luxury (R739,900) variants. Colour options include Mars Red, White, Grey, Orange, and Black.
GWM backs the Tank 300 with a seven-year/200 000km warranty, seven-year unlimited roadside assistance, and seven-year/75 000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 15 000km or 12 months.
