Foton’s First Local Pickup Rolls Off the Line

The first pre-production Completely Knocked Down (CKD) Foton pickup rolled off the assembly line at the brand’s local facility, a moment the Chinese manufacturer described as historic.

The Foton Tunland bakkies are being produced in partnership with fellow Chinese automaker BAIC at the 540 000 m² BAIC plant in the Coega Special Economic Zone near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. The collaboration is seen as a key step in strengthening industrial cooperation and boosting local manufacturing capacity.

Foton says the CKD project forms a vital element of its “Lighthouse Plan” in Africa, a strategy that positions the continent as a major growth hub within its global operations. Establishing CKD production in South Africa, the company adds, represents a long-term commitment to localisation, job creation and technology transfer.

“Rolling the first pre-production CKD Foton pickup off the South African line represents more than just a milestone. It is a symbol of investment, trust, partnership and progress,” said Foton South Africa CEO, Marius Smal. “It shows our belief in Africa’s potential and our confidence in South Africa as a hub for innovation and growth.”

The achievement underscores the growing industrial partnership between China and South Africa. Local assembly is expected to improve vehicle availability, enhance after-sales support and contribute to a stronger regional economy.

For customers, the local build promises competitive pricing, faster delivery and easier access to servicing. The pre-production stage also lays the groundwork for full-scale manufacturing, allowing Foton to tailor its vehicles more closely to African conditions and consumer preferences.

Foton has signalled its intention to expand its locally assembled model range, reinforcing its confidence in South Africa’s industrial and market potential.
