Dealer Optimism Grows as August Car Sales Hit Record Levels

August was a month of celebration for South African car dealers, with new-vehicle sales achieving their best performance in years.

August was a month of celebration for South African car dealers, with new-vehicle sales achieving their best performance in years. According to both naamsa and NADA, robust consumer demand and easing credit conditions have boosted the market, even as exporters prepare for tougher global conditions.

August delivered exceptional results for South Africa's automotive sector, reinforcing the critical role of domestic demand in sustaining growth. While the export market faces turbulence from rising tariffs and increased global competition, local sales volumes surged to new highs.

According to figures released by naamsa | The Automotive Business Council, total new-vehicle sales reached 51,880 units in August 2025, an increase of 18.7% compared to the same period last year. This strong performance marked the highest level since October 2019 and represented an important milestone for the industry.

Passenger cars led the charge, posting a 22.5% increase to 36,914 units, the highest monthly tally since September 2015. Car rental companies contributed significantly, accounting for 15% of passenger sales, while light commercial vehicles climbed 15.1% to 12,326 units. In contrast, medium and heavy trucks struggled, with declines of 3.9% and 8.8% respectively.

Exports also registered growth, with 37,500 vehicles shipped abroad, up 6.2% year-on-year. However, naamsa cautioned that additional tariff barriers and competitive pressures could challenge this momentum in the near future.

Commenting on these results, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) expressed optimism for the retail segment. 'The good news has continued for the South African retail motor industry, with August delivering another bumper month for sales. It was, in fact, the best sales month since September 2015, with 51,880 vehicles retailed ' 18.7% higher than the corresponding month last year,' said Ryan Seele, an executive member of the NADA NEC.

Dealers reported stronger foot traffic, mainly from private buyers rather than fleets or corporates. Many consumers appeared motivated by recent interest rate cuts, which have made vehicle financing more accessible. While not all visits converted into immediate purchases, the intent to buy in the short term has provided dealers with renewed confidence.

Locally produced models continued to dominate in the affordable passenger car segment. The Toyota Corolla Cross and VW Vivo emerged as clear winners, each recording sales in excess of 2,000 units. These results demonstrate that demand for home-built vehicles remains strong despite the entry of more competitively priced imports. Notably, MG entered the reporting list with 443 sales.

The used-car market mirrored the positive trend, particularly for vehicles priced below R300,000, which continue to attract budget-conscious buyers.

While the immediate outlook is encouraging, both naamsa and NADA emphasise that the industry must remain vigilant in the face of evolving international trade dynamics. For now, strong local demand has set the stage for a resilient end to the year.
