Chery South Africa has confirmed a landmark investment in a new manufacturing plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, marking its transition from importer to local producer.
Four years after re-entering the market, the brand has established itself as a consistent top-10 player with 50,000 units sold annually and a network of 150 dealers nationwide. The new facility, previously operated by Nissan, will be recommissioned and upgraded over the next 12 to 18 months, with the first locally built Chery vehicles expected by mid-2027.
The project will retain most of the existing workforce while creating nearly 3,000 direct and indirect jobs across manufacturing, supply chain, and services. Chery also plans to strengthen the local supplier base, boosting competitiveness in the wider automotive industry.

“This investment is a vote of confidence in South Africa and a long-term commitment to its economic and industrial development,” said Charlie Zhang, Vice President of Chery Auto.
By producing locally, Chery aims to enhance flexibility, shorten lead times, and build a stronger competitive edge in South Africa and across Africa.
