BYD has launched its Dolphin Surf electric vehicle in South Africa, marking the Chinese manufacturer’s push into the local mass market with competitively priced models starting at R339,900 for the Comfort variant and R389,900 for the Dynamic.

The compact electric car comes with two battery options that reflect its positioning as an urban commuter vehicle. The entry-level Comfort model uses a 30 kWh battery delivering 232 kilometres of WLTP-certified range, whilst the higher-spec Dynamic increases capacity to 38.8 kWh for 295 kilometres between charges. Both variants share the same 55 kW electric motor driving the front wheels.

Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 with the company’s Blade Battery technology, the Dolphin Surf incorporates safety features including a body shell made from 61% high-strength steel. The five-door hatchback offers practical storage with a 230-litre boot that expands to 930 litres when the rear seats are folded.

Charging infrastructure remains a critical consideration for electric vehicle adoption. The Dynamic model supports DC fast charging at up to 40 kW, enabling a 30-80% charge in half an hour, while the Comfort is limited to 30 kW. BYD bundles a 7 kW home charging wallbox with each vehicle to address range anxiety concerns.

Technology features include a 10.1-inch central touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, complemented by a 7-inch digital instrument display. The vehicle offers voice control functionality and includes 15W wireless phone charging. An integrated karaoke system adds an unconventional entertainment element.

The Dolphin Surf’s Vehicle-to-Load capability allows owners to use the car’s battery to power external devices, a feature BYD demonstrated at its Cape Town launch event by running entertainment equipment directly from the vehicle.

BYD’s warranty terms aim to address concerns about electric vehicle reliability and battery longevity. The package includes three-year servicing coverage up to 60,000 kilometres, a three-year vehicle warranty extending to 100,000 kilometres, and an eight-year battery warranty covering 200,000 kilometres.

The launch follows BYD’s broader global expansion strategy as the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer seeks new markets beyond China. Ming Xing, BYD’s South African brand manager, described the Dolphin Surf as targeting mainstream buyers rather than early adopters willing to pay premium prices.

Despite being positioned as affordable, the Dolphin Surf’s pricing remains substantially higher than equivalent petrol-powered vehicles in South Africa’s compact car segment, reflecting the current cost premium associated with electric vehicle technology.
