BYD has expanded its local line-up with the launch of the ATTO 2 DM-i, a compact plug-in hybrid SUV aimed at motorists seeking efficiency and practicality without the limitations of a fully electric vehicle.
The model is positioned to appeal to buyers who want lower running costs and modern technology while retaining the convenience of petrol power.
The ATTO 2 DM-i is built around BYD's DM-i Super Hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. The petrol unit produces 72kW and 122Nm, while the motor is rated at 145kW and 300Nm.
In hybrid operation, the system delivers a combined maximum output of 122kW. A 7.85kWh Blade Battery allows up to 40km of pure electric driving under WLTC conditions. Charging is supported at 3.3kW AC with scheduled charging available, and fuel consumption is listed at 5.1L/100km. The SUV meets Euro 5 emission standards and offers a combined driving range of up to 930km.
Inside, the cabin provides seating for five and a cargo capacity of 425 litres, expandable to 1,335 litres. The interior is equipped with a rotating touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a full LCD instrument panel.
The Comfort derivative features a 10.1-inch display and four speakers, while the Dynamic offers a larger 12.8-inch screen, six speakers, premium PU seating, electric driver's seat adjustment and a 50W wireless phone charger. Both versions include advanced driver assistance systems and multiple airbags.
The exterior design is compact yet practical, measuring 4,330mm in length, 1,830mm in width and 1,675mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620mm. Styling highlights include LED headlamps, alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof. Colour choices include Obsidian Black, Midnight Blue, Time Grey and Skiing White. The Dynamic adds electric folding mirrors with integrated foot lights.
Two derivatives are available. The Comfort offers the core hybrid system and connectivity features, while the Dynamic adds adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, front parking radars and enhanced safety assistance systems.
Pricing begins at R449,900 for the Comfort and R489,900 for the Dynamic. The ATTO 2 DM-i is available through BYD dealerships nationwide, providing South African motorists with a new option in the compact hybrid SUV segment.
