Alexandra Automotive Hub Moves Closer to Opening

The City of Johannesburg is preparing to hand over the Alexandra Automotive Hub for operations on 22 July 2026, with the facility set to support township automotive businesses, skills development and local job creation.

The City of Johannesburg is moving ahead with plans to bring the Alexandra Automotive Hub into operation, marking an important step in its efforts to grow township economies and support local enterprise.

Led by the Department of Economic Development, the project is designed to strengthen Alexandra’s automotive sector by creating space for small businesses, skills development and job creation. The Hub has been developed with support from the Joburg Development Agency and the Joburg Property Company as part of the City’s broader programme to stimulate economic activity in township communities.

A major milestone has now been reached with the appointment of the Automotive Industry Development Centre as the anchor tenant. This appointment signals the Hub’s shift from planning and development towards operational readiness, while helping to attract further business activity and industry partnerships.

Over recent months, the project team has worked on finalising operating arrangements, preparing the site, strengthening stakeholder engagement and putting governance processes in place. Engagement with the Alexandra community has remained central to the process, ensuring that the facility responds to local needs and creates meaningful opportunities for residents and businesses.

Once operational, the Hub is expected to help township-based automotive entrepreneurs become more competitive by supporting business formalisation, technical training and greater participation in the wider automotive value chain.

The facility is scheduled to be formally handed over for operations at an official ceremony on 22 July 2026. This event will recognise the role of project partners and mark the start of a new phase for the Hub as a centre for enterprise development, innovation and skills growth.

A public launch is planned for Transport Month in October 2026, when the City will present the Hub as one of its flagship township economy initiatives. The launch will highlight its role in attracting investment, supporting automotive businesses and opening pathways to inclusive economic growth.

The City says it remains committed to working with partners, industry stakeholders and the Alexandra community to ensure the Hub becomes a sustainable driver of local investment, jobs and enterprise development.
